What the black streaks are
The streaks are an algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles and spreads by airborne spores, which is why one streaked roof on a street is usually followed by the rest.
Pressure washing takes the color off but leaves the algae alive, so the streaks return within a season or two. It also strips the granules that protect your shingles from the sun. We apply a cleaning solution at low pressure, let it work, and rinse. The algae dies instead of just fading.

Common questions
Does this void my shingle warranty?
No. Low-pressure cleaning with an approved solution is the method the shingle industry recommends for algae. High-pressure washing is what strips granules and gives a manufacturer grounds to deny a claim.
How long before the streaks come back?
Most roofs stay clean for two to three years here. Roofs under trees with poor airflow regrow faster than roofs in full sun.
Do you walk on the roof?
As little as possible, especially on tile. Most of the work is done from ladders and the ground with equipment built to reach.
Will it hurt my landscaping?
Plants below the roofline are soaked with clean water before we start and rinsed again after. Delicate beds get covered.
Do I need to be home?
No. We need an outside spigot and a heads-up about anything unusual. We send photos when it's done.
